South London has numerous football pitches but Brockwell Park has long been a fans favourite of residents of Lambeth and Southwark looking for their weekly football fix.
Like most parks in South London Brockwell Park struggles to maintain playability throughout the winter months. However, as a preferred partner of Lambeth Parks Management StarFootballers has priority access to the only football field that remains playable throughout winter (right opposite the Parks Depot next to Norwood Road Gate!)
Lambeth Parks Management ensure that all football pitches are well maintained throughout the year. This includes monthly cutting during the summer months and bi-monthly cutting during winter (when possible). Of course during the rainy, muddy season Nov to March it isn't always possible to get a tractor style lawn mower on the grass but rest assured the Brockwell Park grounds maintenance team are experts and do their best all year round! Realistically, with heavy rain there will be a cancellation or two each winter but the benefits of outdoor winter training are backed by science and all parents have feedback to me that they want their kids to train and play outdoors as much as possible!
Summer months:
Footwear: Firm Ground football boots are essential and even Astro-Turf boots can be worn during June to August but this is only for a short period of time.
Clothing: Shorts and t-shirts are a must and under-armour style clothing are best left at home as they quickly cause kids to overheat.
Winter Months:
Footwear: Anti-Clog Soft Ground football boots are a must due to the muddy nature of park training.
Clothing: Shorts and t-shirts for as long as possible but of course there comes a time when under-armour style clothing is permissible.
Forbidden: Watches, neck chains, baseball caps, jewellery, hoodies, jackets.
